Interesting D.Y. Nye Co., Inc. Projects

Over the last 16years D.Y. Nye Co., Inc. has participated in a variety of projects that span the technology spectrum. Below or some of the more unique projects we have participated in.

Video Wall Midwestern University Civil Engineering Lab:

A Big 10 University civil engineering lab conducts a variety of experiments on construction materials, testing the stress points at which the materials will disintegrate. Because of the dangerous nature of this testing many of the experiment administrators conduct the procedures behind industrial protected glass. In order to gain better viewing perspectives the lab has been outfitted with cameras which record the different experiments for later analysis.

The lab wanted to enhance the experiment process by having the ability to watch any or all of the cameras during the experiments across a video wall. By using Datapath’s video input and output cards D.Y. Nye Co., was able to offer the University the ability to display any of its camera feeds across 12-screens with no restriction on position or size. Below is a photo of the solution.

Radio Station Communication

Although disc jockey’s and program producers interface with their audiences via sound and without video, the technology located in radio studios to deliver that content is becoming more video intensive. Recently a Washington D.C. radio station conglomerate remodeled all of their studios with the intent on providing their DJ’s and producers with some of the most sophisticated technology in order to deliver superior audio quality.

During the remodeling process D.Y. Nye Co. was called upon to address two key components of the redesign;

1. Conservation of space

2. Improve communication

Traditionally space is a premium within radio studios and this particular environment was no different. What engineers wanted was to have a central screen that could be sub divided into different zones and provide the DJ with a central location where he/she could view all of their mixing and equalizer tools. By using dual channel video capture cards, D.Y. Nye Co. was able to provide the DJ with the ability to capture any two RGB/VGA/DVI video sources and display them on import them onto the central display. Each studio was outfitted with four dual channel captures allowing the screens to display up to 4 different sources simultaneously on a single display.

For the second component improving communication, the engineers wanted a non intrusive method by which the producer or the marketing department could quickly inform the DJ’s of upcoming events or concert promotions. D.Y. Nye Co, again utilized the central large LCD and outfitted it with Sedao’s RSS player software which would display messages that the producers or market department typed in.

CageBuilding for Datacenter security:

A co-location center in the Pittsburgh area that provides customers with managed Network services such as Hosting, Disaster Recovery, and Managed Backup, contacted D.Y. Nye Co., Inc. about segmenting their raised floor space so that their customer’s equipment was not only digitally secured but physically secured as well.

Using a system of wire panels and security bolts, D.Y. Nye Co was able to construct security cages around specified groups of server enclosures. The cages are a modular design, thus the customer was able to customize the design of each cage, which included options of having the fencing installed underneath the raise floor and placing a roof over top the structure to fully secure the enclosure.

Data Center and Facility Management:

Many medium to large size corporations want the ability to manage from a single interface

1.     Servers: both virtual and physical, and control access to them

2.     Power: Consumption both within the Data Center and company wide

3.     Temperature: Cooling for Data Center and HVAC system for the entire corporation

A mid-size pharmaceutical company in West Chester, PA contacted D.Y. Nye Co., Inc about 5 years ago with the desire to implement a solution that would permit them to manage their servers both locally within the Data Center and from remote locations via TCP/IP. In addition to the management of the main Data Center, IT Managers wanted the server management solution to provide them with the ability to integrate their remote offices’ infrastructure and limit remote users’ access to their facility’s servers.

D.Y. Nye Co., Inc. presented Raritan’s Command Center and Dominion series switches as a solution for the pharmaceutical company for two main reasons. First Raritan’s Dominion series solution is a modular solution that can be implemented in phases and can grow as the environment grows. Second Raritan’s Command Center when combined with Power IQ and DC Track offers the pharmaceutical group a foundation of feature sets which could be implemented in the future and would allow the users to manage other infrastructure metrics such as;

1.     Power Consumption

2.     Cable management

3.     Environmental metrics

The pharmaceutical group did agree that Raritan’s Command Center and Dominion Series switches afforded them the best solution for their needs, and over the past 4 years have deployed switches at their headquarter facility in West Chester PA, and their remote facilities in Salt Lake City, UT and Frazer, PA. All units are centrally managed out of West Chester offering managers a centralized view of both their servers and users. As the pharmaceutical company’s infrastructure continues to grow Raritan’s Command Center solution will continue to provide a platform which is versatile and offer enterprise management capabilities. Below are some screen captures of the Command Center and Power IQ’s Dashboard.
